This one's for the Americas & EMEA
We're shipping real booster packs to the winners, so for this event we can only take registrations from players living in the Americas (North and South America) or EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). By registering, you confirm you can give us a valid shipping address in one of those regions. Registrations from other regions will be removed.
Playing from APAC, Oceania, or anywhere else? We haven't forgotten you. We'll hold future events for your region, so join our Discord server to hear about them first.

Rules
The SlingLab Open is a structured, competitive, yet salt-free Commander tournament that highlights community skill and fair play.
Decks
- Every decklist is validated in the SlingLab app.
- Power bracket: decks must be strictly SlingLab Bracket 3 (B3). Bracket 4 and higher are not allowed.
- Deck value cap: no more than $1,500 USD total market value, as estimated by SlingLab's deck evaluation.
- Legality: the standard Commander ban list applies.
- At start.gg sign-up, give your Discord handle, your SlingLab username, and a Moxfield or other decklist link for verification.
Restricted strategies
- Fast mana limit (max 1): to prevent runaway early-game starts while keeping entry accessible, each deck may run at most ONE fast mana piece that costs 0 or 1 mana (e.g. Sol Ring, Mox Diamond, Mox Opal, Chrome Mox, or Lotus Petal). Running more than one in the same list is strictly banned.
- Mass land destruction is banned: spells or loops that destroy, bounce, or lock down lands en masse (e.g. Armageddon, Ruination, Jokulhaups, Blood Moon locks). Spot land destruction, like Strip Mine or Assassin's Trophy, is fine.
- Early competitive stax and hard locks are banned: hard stax pieces built to completely shut down opponents' ability to play Magic before turn 3 or 4 (e.g. Winter Orb, Static Orb, Drannith Magistrate + Possibility Storm).
- Deterministic 2-card infinite combos that win on the spot are discouraged if they can be easily tutored and executed consistently before turn 5.
Rounds & time
- Each Swiss round is 90 minutes.
- If a pod is still playing when time runs out, the current player finishes their turn, then the pod plays 3 more turns in total.
- If nobody has won by the end of the 3rd extra turn, the game is a draw for every player still in it.
Check-in & waitlist
- Check-in on start.gg is mandatory. It opens 45 minutes before the start (18:15 GMT) and closes 15 minutes before (18:45 GMT).
- Registered players who don't check in on time give up their seat.
- Checked-in waitlist players in Discord are moved up in registration order to fill empty seats before Round 1 pairings.
Eligibility
- Registration is limited to players living in the Americas (North and South America) or EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). Registrations from other regions, such as APAC and Oceania, will be removed.
- By registering, you confirm you can provide a valid shipping address in one of those regions.
- You must join the SlingLab Discord server and have a free SlingLab account to play.
Conduct
- Toxic behavior, excessive salt, or intentional stalling leads to judge intervention or disqualification.
- Tournament admins have the final say on rules interpretations, SlingLab deck checks, and board-state rulings.
Scoring
Pods use weighted placement points, which reward survival and remove board-state ambiguity: 1st place (the winner) gets 5 points, 2nd 3, 3rd 2, and 4th 1.
Whenever points are split, they're rounded to the nearest whole point, with halves rounding up (2.75 and 2.5 become 3, 1.5 becomes 2).
- Time-limit draw: all points not yet awarded in the pod are split equally between the players still in the game.
- Simultaneous knockouts: the points for the positions those players knocked each other into are split equally between them.
| Situation | Points each | Math |
|---|---|---|
| Time runs out with 4 players left | 3 | 11 ÷ 4 = 2.75 |
| Time runs out with 3 players left | 3 | 10 ÷ 3 = 3.33 |
| Time runs out with 2 players left | 4 | 8 ÷ 2 = 4 |
| 3 players knocked out at once | 2 | 6 ÷ 3 = 2 |
| 2nd and 3rd knocked out together | 3 | 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 |
| 3rd and 4th knocked out together | 2 | 3 ÷ 2 = 1.5 |
Ties for the Top 4 cut are broken by start.gg's automatic tiebreakers: Opponent Game Win Percentage (OGWP), then head-to-head.
FAQ
- Is it really free?
- Yes. There's no entry fee, and standard shipping on booster packs is covered for winners in the supported regions.
- Who can play?
- Anyone with a SlingLab account who lives in the Americas or EMEA, up to 64 players. All skill levels are welcome.
- What decks are allowed?
- Bracket 3 Commander decks worth $1,500 USD or less, both checked in the SlingLab app. The standard Commander ban list applies, plus a few event restrictions: at most one 0 or 1 mana fast mana piece, no mass land destruction, no early hard stax or locks, and early deterministic 2-card combos are discouraged. See the rules for details.
- What do I need to sign up?
- Your Discord handle, your SlingLab username, and a Moxfield or other decklist link, all entered on start.gg.
- What if registration is full?
- Join the waitlist on start.gg. Checked-in waitlist players fill empty seats in registration order before Round 1.
- What happens if time runs out?
- The current player finishes their turn, then the pod gets 3 more turns in total. No winner by then means a draw, and the remaining points are split between the players still in.
- Why is it region-limited?
- The Collector Booster prizes ship physically, and we can only ship to the Americas and EMEA for this event. We'll hold future events for other regions, and we'll announce them on Discord.
- Do I need Discord?
- Yes. Joining the SlingLab Discord server is required, and it's where we contact winners.
- What if I lose early?
- Keep playing. Swiss rounds don't eliminate anyone, and finishing all four rounds enters you in the live door prize raffle.
- How do winners get their prizes?
- Tournament admins message winners on Discord within 24 hours of the event to arrange shipping and hand out digital rewards.
See you Dec 12
